Separating Fact from Fiction: The Biggest Myths About Kids Casting Agencies
By the FAM | Florida Family & Kids Casting Experts
If you have spent any time researching kids modeling or casting for your family, you have probably encountered a lot of conflicting information. Some of it is genuinely helpful. Some of it is outdated. And some of it is rooted in real experiences parents have had with companies that did not operate with integrity.
The skepticism parents bring to this industry is not unfounded. There are bad actors out there and it is worth knowing how to spot them. But there are also a lot of myths about how legitimate casting companies work that keep families from pursuing real, worthwhile opportunities. This post addresses both. Here is what is true, what is not, and how to tell the difference.
Myth 1: All Casting Companies Are Just Looking to Take Your Money
This is the myth that stops more families than any other, and it exists because unfortunately some companies do operate this way. But it is not how legitimate casting companies work, and understanding the difference is straightforward once you know what to look for.
A legitimate casting company makes money when brands hire them to cast real projects. That is the business model. Brands come to us with a confirmed brief, we find the right talent, the project happens, and the brand pays us for that service. Families are never charged for being added to the network, submitted, considered, or booked.
The FAM is funded by the brands and production companies that hire us to cast their projects, not by the families in our network. Families do not pay to be considered for opportunities. They do not pay when they book a job. That is not how we operate.
The red flag to watch for: Any company that charges you an upfront fee simply to register your child or be considered for opportunities is not operating legitimately. Registration and submissions to castings should always be free.
Myth 2: They Will Promise Your Child Fame and Guaranteed Bookings
A legitimate casting company will never guarantee bookings. No one can. Whether a child books a job depends on the brief, the brand's specific needs, the timing, and a hundred other variables that no casting company controls. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not being honest with you.
What a legitimate company can offer is access to real opportunities, honest industry insight, and genuine feedback about where your child stands and what might strengthen their submissions. That is a very different thing from a promise, and it is worth a great deal more.
At The FAM we are straightforward with every family we work with. We submit talent to the briefs we believe they are right for. Sometimes you will book, sometimes you will not. That is the nature of the industry and any company that tells you differently is not a company you want to work with.
The red flag to watch for: Phrases like "we can guarantee your child will be booked" or "your child has what it takes to be famous" are sales tactics, not professional assessments. Walk away.
Myth 3: You Have to Pay for Expensive Packages to Get Started
This one has a scam version and a legitimate version, and parents deserve to know the difference.
The scam version: a company pressures you into purchasing a photography package or a modeling course as a condition of being looked at, added to a network or considered for work.
The legitimate version: a casting company connects you with a photographer for a session, or offers optional portfolio building sessions as a resource for families and children who want to strengthen their submissions.
No legitimate company should ever make purchasing something a condition of being added to the network or considered for work, and that guidance should only ever come after genuine interest has been expressed, never as a condition of applying in the first place.
At The FAM, portfolio content days are available for families and children who want to invest in their submission materials. These sessions are paid because they require professional photographers, stylists, and production support to execute properly, and that is standard across the industry. Most reputable agencies and casting companies charge for these sessions, and when they do not, it is worth asking how that cost is being recovered elsewhere. A modeling agency, for example, may absorb the upfront cost of your photos but will recoup it through commission on every job you book, indefinitely. As a casting company, we do not charge commission on any work you book through us, which means the cost of a portfolio session is straightforward, and entirely yours to decide on. These materials belong to you. We can use these images to confidently submit you to brands, and you can use them on socials, or to submit to any other casting and modeling opportunities you see fit. There are no strings attached and no ongoing financial relationship built around it. These sessions are completely optional, and the decision to invest in them is yours alone.
That said, we want to be straight with you: the families and children who have strong professional portfolio content are more competitive. Brands gravitate toward talent who show range and professionalism, and a polished portfolio communicates that a family is serious about this. If other families in the network are investing in this and you are not, you are likely being outcompeted for the same briefs. Simply put, strong portfolio content betters your chances of winning briefs. We will always go to bat for families whose natural photos clearly show who they are, and everyone starts somewhere. But if you want to book consistently, doing the work is part of it.
Think of it like any other investment in your child's development. Dance classes, recital photos, competition fees. Parents invest in these things because they want their child to be prepared and competitive. A portfolio session is the same kind of investment, and this one directly supports real, paying work on the other side of it.
The red flag to watch for: Any company that makes paid packages feel mandatory or uses strong interest in your child or family to pressure you into spending money before you are even in the network is not operating with your best interest in mind.
Myth 4: Kids Modeling Is Exploitative
This myth comes from a real place. There have been situations in the entertainment and modeling industries where children were not properly protected, and those stories rightfully shape how parents approach this world.
But kids modeling, handled correctly, is a genuinely positive experience. Children build confidence, develop professionalism, learn to take direction, and earn real income doing something they enjoy. The families who have the best experiences are the ones working with companies that prioritize the child's wellbeing above everything else, that keep shoots age-appropriate, that never pressure children, and that treat parents as full partners in every decision.
The responsibility falls on both sides. Parents need to research who they are working with carefully. And casting companies need to operate with the kind of transparency and integrity that makes that trust warranted. At The FAM, the safety and wellbeing of every child and family we work with is not a line item. It is the foundation of how we operate.
The red flag to watch for: Any company that dismisses a parent's concerns, pressures a child on set, or makes families feel like they have no say in what their child participates in is not a company worth working with.
Myth 5: My Child Needs to Live in a Major City to Find Real Opportunities
Florida families hear this one frequently, and it simply is not true. The modeling and casting landscape has shifted significantly in recent years. Brands are actively seeking diverse, real families from markets beyond New York and Los Angeles, and Florida in particular has become one of the most active casting markets in the country.
Palm Beach County, Miami, Orlando, and the broader South Florida region are all legitimate, active markets for kids and family modeling. National campaigns, lifestyle shoots, commercial productions, and brand content are all happening here regularly. And because we are based in Palm Beach County, our talent has access to local opportunities as well as the broader South Florida and statewide pipeline.
The red flag to watch for: Any company that tells you the only way to access real work is to relocate or travel constantly is not being straight with you about what the market actually looks like.
Myth 6: Casting Companies Are the Same as Modeling Agencies
These are two different things and the distinction matters. A modeling agency represents talent and earns a commission when they place that talent in jobs. Nobody gets paid until the talent goes out and books the work, which means agents are motivated to hustle on their talent's behalf. That sounds good in theory, but in practice it often means talent gets submitted to a high volume of castings regardless of fit, a throw everything at the wall and see what sticks approach. You can end up running around to casting after casting where you were never really within the profile the brand was looking for in the first place.
That is actually something worth paying attention to. You do not want to be submitted to every casting under the sun. You want to be submitted to the ones where you are genuinely what the brand is looking for.
A casting company works differently. We are hired directly by brands who come to us with a specific brief. We look through our network with intention, match talent to what the brand has actually asked for, and submit selectively. Because we are the ones the brand hired to find their talent, one of our people is going to get that job. The pipeline is direct and the fit matters from the start.
How to Tell a Legitimate Company from One That Is Not
Registration is always free. Submission to opportunities is always free. You are never pressured into purchasing anything as a condition of being considered for work. Bookings are never guaranteed. The company is transparent about how they make money and who their clients are. They treat parents as partners and take concerns seriously. And they have a verifiable presence, real clients, and a track record you can look into.
If something feels off, trust that feeling. Ask questions. A legitimate company welcomes them.
