Is Kids Modeling Free? What Parents Need to Know Before They Submit
By The FAM | Florida Family & Kids Casting Experts
The short answer is that joining a casting agency costs nothing and you keep everything you earn when you book. But modeling itself is not entirely free, and parents who go in understanding that tend to have a much better experience than those who do not.
Here is an honest breakdown of how the money actually works, how casting agencies are compensated, and what parents should realistically expect to invest in kids modeling.
How a Casting Agency Works: No Fees, No Commission
At The FAM we do not charge families to join our network and we do not take a commission from your earnings when you book a job.
When a brand or production comes to us with a brief, we match the right families from our network to that opportunity. The brand pays us for the casting service. The talent is compensated directly by the brand for the booking. We are not in the middle taking a cut of what you earn. What you book is yours.
This is one of the fundamental differences between a casting agency and a traditional modeling or talent agency, and it is worth understanding clearly before you engage with any agency or network.
What About Talent Agencies and Commissions?
A traditional modeling or talent agency operates differently. They represent individual talent, actively seek out opportunities on their behalf, and earn a commission, typically twenty percent, when that talent books a job. Payment goes to the modeling agency first, they take their cut, and then they pay you.
This model exists because the agency is doing ongoing work on your behalf, managing your profile, submitting you for opportunities, and building your career over time. The commission is the compensation for that ongoing representation.
The Quick Distinction
A casting agency works on behalf of the brand, connecting the right talent from its network to serve a specific, confirmed project. A modeling or talent agency works on behalf of the talent, actively trying to connect them to castings and brands. Two different sides of the same industry, two very different relationships.
Neither is inherently better than the other. They serve different purposes and can even work well together. The more opportunity the better. What matters most is that you understand which one you are working with, as this directly impacts how your compensation works and what it costs you.
So Does That Mean Modeling Is Free?
Not exactly. Joining our network costs nothing, and when you book through us, you keep everything you earn. But if you want to be genuinely competitive in this industry, there is investment involved, from building strong portfolio imagery and keeping your portfolio current to the time, energy and effort it takes to develop your skills and be prepared for opportunities.
Think of it the way you would think about any activity your child participates in.
A child who plays soccer needs cleats, a uniform, league fees, and practice time. A child who takes dance needs lessons, costumes, recital fees, and hours of rehearsal. No one expects those activities to be free, and no one expects a child to show up to a competitive league without preparation, equipment, or time invested. Modeling works the same way.
There is one meaningful difference worth noting though. Most kids activities are purely an expense. You pay for soccer, for dance, for gymnastics, and the return is the experience and the development, which is genuinely valuable, but no one is cutting your child a check at the end of the season. Modeling is also a wonderful developmental experience for the right children and families, and it can actually become a way to earn. Nothing is guaranteed and no one should enter this industry expecting immediate or consistent income, but by investing in the right materials and showing up prepared and professional, the chances of this turning into something lucrative increase. It is one of the few activities where the investment has a real potential return, and that is worth keeping in mind.
Where the Investment Goes
Photography. Strong photos are the single most important tool you have in this industry. Clean, current, professional headshots and well-executed digitals are what get your child submitted confidently and what make brands notice them once the submission is made. If your photos are not where they need to be, that is the first place to invest.
Staying current. Children grow and change quickly. Photos from a year ago may not accurately represent how your child looks right now. Keeping your imagery current is an ongoing investment, not a one time expense.
Time. This is the investment people forget to account for. Being responsive when opportunities come in, being available and flexible enough to accommodate shoots, showing up prepared and on time. These things are free but they cost time and attention, and families that are willing to invest both tend to have more positive outcomes.
Practice. Comfort on camera develops over time. Mirror work, posture, taking direction, getting used to repeating the same action multiple times, these are all things that can be practiced at home and make a real difference on set. This costs nothing monetarily but is an investment in attention and consistency.
Learning how it works. The families that do best in this industry are the ones who take the time to understand it. What casting agencies do, how briefs work, what is expected on set, how to communicate professionally with your casting agency. None of that requires a formal class but it does require attention and intention. We have a library of resources on this site to help you get there, and we are always happy to answer questions along the way.
The Bottom Line
Joining The FAM costs nothing. Booking through us means you keep everything you earn. But showing up to this industry prepared, competitive, and ready to make the most of the opportunities that come your way requires real investment, just like any other activity your family or child takes seriously.
The families that treat it that way are the ones that build real momentum. The ones that expect it to be entirely free and entirely effortless tend to find that the results match that expectation.
